The Healing Power of Pets!

If you tend to feel sad, lonely or depressed, I recommend that you consider adopting a pet. Many scientific studies have shown that pets can help us heal physically and emotionally.

The Center for Disease Control plainly states that pets can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, cure loneliness, increase exercise and improve social life. Other research has shown that pet-owners with AIDS are less likely to be depressed than non-owners; that kids growing up with cats and / or dogs tend to have fewer allergies and asthma, stronger immune systems, and learn greater responsibility.

Another study looked at three different conditions to get an understanding of how pets affect our life. They compared pet owners to non-owners;  affectionate vs. less affectionate animals; and observed the healing power of an animal friend after a rejection experience. The results of these studies showed that pet owners reported greater self-esteem, better physical fitness and less loneliness than non-owners. That having any affectionate animal-friend can bring fulfillment and boost wellness even when humans are letting you down. Another finding that there was a positive correlation between pet and people relations: having a great relationship with your pet will be conducive to your social life with people. It appears that this bond strengthens self-esteem, increases happiness and promotes health.

Pet Therapy Programs, which are designed to help people heal physically, emotionally, and socially, have been applied for many years with amazing results. For example, pets have helped patients in hospitals; signer citizens in hospices; children with big challenges; and inmates in prisons. These programs have helped thousands of people heal just by working with animals.

Those of us who have been blessed by the presence of pets in our life know that pets are our close companions because they provide Unconditional Love, Happiness, Laughter, and Friendship. Pets teach us to be more patient and to enjoy the little things in Life.
