Earth Day, Happiness Tip and News Update

Happy Earth Day!

April 22 is Earth Day, and this year it marks the 51st anniversary of what is considered by many the birth of the modern environmental movement that started in April 1970, which focuses on raising awareness about the environmental concerns.

Even though, ALL serious environmental issues we have today are caused by big corporations, which are driven by their greed and thirst for power and control, by exploiting the natural resources of the Earth, from water, wood, oil, precious metals (gold and silver), to semi-precious and other resources; and they are destroying and polluting the air, water and soil of the Earth. However, we the people have a responsibility to help protect, defend and build a clean, healthy, and diverse world for all living beings, for the present and future generations. Here are some ideas of what we can do:

  • Help Nature and all Living Beings to Grow and Thrive:
    • Start a garden; plant Trees; and Flowers: grow some of your own food; this will also provide food for Bees, Butterflies and small Birds, which will make a huge difference, as they pollinate about 90% of our foods. If you don’t have a garden, use the roof, a balcony, or windows.
    • Daily, put a bowl of fresh water outside for Birds to drink, especially in the summer.
    • Adopt some home plants: this will help clean the air inside your home.
  • Do whatever you can to help protect Nature:
    • Protect Trees from being cut; and the Environment from being polluted.
    • Communicate your demands and priorities to companies to be more responsible; and to your elected representatives to be proactive in protecting Nature.
    • Boycott corporations that do not act responsibly to protect and keep the Environment clean. 
  • Reduce unnecessary consumptions. This will reduce waste of energy and resources, and will save you money.
    • Turn off electricity, air-conditioning and heating when and where it is not needed.
    • Save water whenever you can: take shorter showers; close the tap when not in use; collect rain water if you can.
  • Buy goods of good quality, and avoid buying cheap stuff: this will save raw material, reduce waste and save you money on the long term.
  • Recycle whatever you can:
    • Donate unneeded clothes, gadgets and computers to people who can use them or to repair shops;
    • Return hangers to the cleaners;
    • Give unwanted papers, newspapers, magazines and other recyclable materials to recycling factories.
  • Reuse whatever you can:
    • Use recycled items whenever possible, like for example recycled chlorine-free paper.
    • Buy reusable bags and containers.
    • Avoid using plastic, especially plastic bags and toys.
  • Use environmentally safe cleaning products, and avoid using harsh chemicals that are toxic and harmful to all Living Beings and the Environment.
  • Educate yourself, your friends and your family about Earth Day and how our future, our health and our existence depends on how we interact with our environment and natural resources. Through natural agriculture, planting trees, addressing waste, acting responsibly, and adopting plant-based diets, we can make a difference.

Earth Day is Every Day! To build a better future for all of us, we must commit to living responsibly all year-round.

Remember that what we do to the environment, we do to ourselves:

The Story of Plastic (Animated Short)

This short animated film ‘The Story of Plastic’ reveals the causes and consequences of the global plastics crisis.

Nature makes us happy. Nature eases our mind and makes us feel more content. Biophilia, the human love for nature and seeking connection with it, is innate in us. When we connect with Nature, we are more likely to be happy.

Studies have shown that there is less depression, less anxiety, and less crime and violence in cities and neighborhoods where there are trees and green landscape compared to those that are mostly concrete.

Studies showed that being in Nature improves our immune systems and our moods, increases levels of vigor, and reduces levels of anxiety, anger, depression and stress. These findings suggest that being in Nature regularly helps lower the risk for stress-related diseases.

Studies have found that walking in nature reduces stress, as it decreases ruminations and lowers neural activity more than walking in an urban setting. Spending time in nature helps us forget about what troubles us; gives us a break from our worries and negative thoughts that plague us – it allows us to shut off the constant chatter of our mind and remove ourselves from the physical environment that keeps us in those negative patterns of doing and thinking without being mindful. Nature helps us be calm and focused on what is important.

Studies have also shown that patients, who stay in hospitals that have sunny rooms with big windows overlooking beautiful green views, heal faster than those in hospitals which don’t.

The evidence is overwhelming: Nature is vital to our health, and it is a healing balm for our bodies, our minds, and our souls.

Go to The Park!

The health benefits of fresh air, sunlight, walking and being in Nature are remarkable. I highly recommend that you go out to a park on regular basis, as often as possible, for 30 minutes or more..
