Happiness Tips for Holiday Stress
Most people love this time of the year, however, many people feel either stressed, depressed or lonely during the holidays. Besides that, we are living in unprecedented stressful times. Here are some tips to help you overcome these uncomfortable feelings and Enjoy the Holidays.
1. Celebrate the Holidays!
It seems that some authority figures are planning to impose further restrictions during the coming holidays. Do whatever you can to navigate these circumstances. Celebrate in any way, shape, form or size that is comfortable for you.
- Have or Join a Party! Getting together with like-minded people, even if just with one or two other people, who respect your privacy and your right to choose what is best for you, will uplift you, especially if you feel lonely or depressed.
- Have a Virtual Party! If it’s not possible to have a real party, organize and enjoy meeting your family and friends online.
- Have a Party of One! If you are single, and it is not possible to join a party, have a party of one: go out if you can, or prepare or buy your favorite food, listen to uplifting music, or watch a feel-good movie (avoid scary movies).
2. Plan and Prepare.
Make a plan, prepare and buy everything you need well in advance. This will help you to avoid the stress of doing everything at once.
3. Buy Only What You Can Afford.
Avoid overspending and debt. Set a realistic budget and stick with it. Using cash will make it easier to control your spending. Make a list of what you need to buy and stick with it. This will reduce the urge to spend more than you are comfortable with. You can make the holidays special without overspending.
You don’t have to celebrate in the same way as you did in the past. Start a new tradition. Focus on creating Happy Memories, instead of focusing on material stuff. Give home-made gifts.
5. Make Time for Yourself!
If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, take some time to rest and relax. Holiday parties and preparations can drain your energy. You will enjoy the party more when you take care of yourself.
6. Sleep Well!
It might be tempting to stay up all night during the holidays, however, regular sleep must be a priority. Exhaustion makes everything more difficult, and it will be hard to control your emotions. Plan for 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.
7. Be Kind!
Kindness create a positive feedback loop – the person giving and the receiver and those who witness any acts of kindness, feel uplifted. Get in the habit of complimenting your relatives and friends when greeting them. Say something nice to them. Compliment them on their outfit, hairstyle, or anything else, can help improve their mood and your relationship with them, and create a positive atmosphere for the gathering.
8. Remember What the Holidays Are About.
The holidays are supposed to be a time of celebration. Spend your time enjoying your friends and family, and have fun.
9. Unplug from the News.
Look for a trusted alternative media to learn about what is going on, and listen to it only once a day, preferably in the afternoon.
10. Eat Healthy Foods.
It is best to make your own food at home. Almost all traditional dishes, including desserts, can be made healthier simply by changing a few ingredients. If you are a guest, bring with you a healthy dish to share, especially if you know that healthy food options are limited. Eating healthy foods help you have more energy and mental sharpness, and better mood, and this will allow you to enjoy the holidays.
11. Eat Before the Party.
Before attending a family gathering or holiday party, eat a healthy meal. That way, you will have more energy, and be less likely to eat unhealthy foods.
12. Reduce the Sugar.
If you are healthy, indulge a little but not too much. There is a lot of evidence that sugar is toxic and addictive. It is linked to many health issues. Sugar also increases depression. The best way to balance your blood sugar and reduce craving sweets is to eat healthy foods.
13. Avoid Alcohol.
Alcohol is toxic: it damages the liver, shrinks the brain and dehydrate the entire body. It increases hunger and appetite and makes you eat more food even when you are full. It influences blood sugar levels, which can negatively affect your decision-making. It can cause conflict and make some people more aggressive. Instead, serve healthy drinks, like fresh smoothies and juices or hot chocolate and green teas.
14. Ask for Help When Needed.
If you feel overwhelmed, ask friends or family members to help you with the planning and preparation for the gathering. Ask your gusts to bring some food to share, so you won’t have to do it all. If you feel lonely, talk to a trusted friend or family member. If you are suffering from serious depression or too much stress, reach out for a professional help.
